Midnight Movie Review

4 out of 10 Skulls

I'd seen the trailer for this movie, and was intriuged.  The story starts out in a mental hospital, where a patient is allowed to view a movie he wrote, directed, and starred in some , one that apparently sent him over the edge and into a killing spree.  The doctor thinks that his viewing the movie will help him get over it, while another doc thinks that it's going to make him worse.  We find out the movie was a slasher flick, and his killings mirrored those in the movie.  Upon said madman watching the movie, left alone and unbound, he bites into his wrist and starts writing.  Cut to the carnage later, a doctor finds the halls of the asylum splattered with blood, the movie-psycho missing, and no answers.  It is presumed that he's dead along with everyone else on the floor.

Five years later, a small-town movie theater is to screen a midnight showing of this movie, which has become cult legend, not only for the rumor that it's a snuff flick, but also for the mystery surrounding its creator.  Cue the ditzy theater staff, the cute girl and her bratty little brother who isn't supposed to be out that late, the dopey co-worker who's willing to take her shift so she can watch the movie with her boyfriend and his friends (total tools), the biker dude and his lowlife girlfriend, blah blah blah.  At this point I'm seeing the pattern, figuring the body count in based on the characters introduced within the first 10 minutes.  Oh yeah, then there's the cop who's convinced that the psycho wasn't killed in the mental institution massacre, but at large, and about to wreak his revenge at this screening in the middle of nowhere, only for the reason that it's the first time it's been seen in a theater.

The movie starts, beginning with a scene very reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the teenagers partying in the bus sort of thing.  In the lobby of the theater, dufus guy is coerced into replacing the soda flavoring in the back room...guess what's gonna happen!  Well, as the killer is doing his thing on screen (which had me laughing, because these teenagers are cringing and jumping like they've never seen a horror movie before), then cut to a different scene, that of the theater worker being slaughtered by the same killer.  At a point where they see a friend of theirs being stalked then killed in the theater's restroom, the assume it's all a great big practical joke, and let's go get him.  Why the biker and his girl go along, I couldn't say, but they do, and soon enough, everyone figures out, oh shit, this is real!  AAAHHH!  Whatever shall we do?  T

As this movie goes on, the bloodbath ensues, the killers big ass corkscrew gets pushed into almost everyone's chest, the characters tire out every cliche, and so on.  the filmmakers threw in the fact that there's also something supernatural going on here, with no explanation as to how or why.  Wierd shit happens, like where the moviegoers can't get out of the theater, and from the outside of the clear glass doors, no one can see them standing right there, banging on the window.

I made the mistake of hoping that someone would explain at least one aspect of this movie, other than the teenagers saying, "I heard it was for real", no dice.  The kills were unimaginative, the storyline was riddled with holes, and I have to say, the ending stunk on ice.  Do youselves a favor.  Don't bother.  That's 90 minutes of my life that I want back.  Dumb movie.  Don't waste the time.
