Zodiac (2007) Review

10 out of 10 Skulls

I am a long time follower of the Zodiac mystery and this is by far the best movie on the subject.  The movie follows three main characters: Artist and observer Robert Graysmith (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) crazy seemingly druggie Paul Avery (Robert Downey jr) and our Inspector David Toschi (played by Mark Ruffalo).  Together and dysfunctionally they try to unfold the mysteries of the zodiac killings.

Throughout the movie, we see the Zodiac Killer actually killing his victims.  He always seems to cover his tracks.

It's a cat and mouse movie for the most part and of course, ends empty handed because, as we all know, the Zodiac Killer has never been identified.  There have been suspects but no cold hard evidence to properly and legally say that X guy is the Zodiac Killer.

This movie was and still is intense.  Even knowing how it ends, you still feel like they are getting SO close to catching the killer.

What stands out for me is the gel between Ruffalo, Downey and Gyllenhaal.  All three are great actors but put in this movie we get to see how they engulf themselves in their characters.

Viewer warning with the movie, however, it is a little boring at times.  I consider this a horror drama where WHEN the events happen, it's horrifying and scary, but when they are just trying to track him and even some of the dialogue, it can drag out.  That aside, everyone who I've shown this movie to has loved it and recommended it to their other friends and they have all loved it.  I recommend the same to you reading this.  If you haven't already, go rent it or buy it.  It's worth it either way.  Peace.
