Mutant Chronicles Review

7 out of 10 Skulls

One of the better B-movies to come along in some time. There's no doubting the frenetic energy of Simon Hunter's steampunk thriller with its deft mixing of CGI and live action.  Some times the visual style works, some times no. But the overall look is effective.

There's lots of shooting, grenades exploding and things going bang and, even if the film gets bogged down by some needless religious mumbo-jumbo, the whole thing looks great in a grimy, Blade Runner kind of way. There's never a dull moment in the thing and the war sequence at the beginning is very exciting.

Sure, there is a lot one can complain about: weak plot, uneven performances and an ending that just kind of hits you with a thud. Bbut lighten up! This is a pulpy combo of Starship Troopers, The Dirty Dozen and any number of 1930s sci-fi tales. Perfect for a rainy Saturday afternoon. So just go and enjoy it!
