The Howling Review
Written by: Norrock The Zombie Eater
Wherewolfs are a big part of halloween. Why?. Well because they give one hell of a scare and a damn good bite. So what more could you gorehounds ask for to watch on halloween then a beast that is hell bent on ripping throats out and leaveing a nice wet carpet of blood and shredded flesh behind its path. Besides zombies, werewolfs has allways been one of my favorites in the horror movie genre. Even thoe most of the newer ones suck ass besides "Dog Soldiers". Like i've said in a few of my other reviews werewolfs and cgi just don't mix. And that is just how they love to make werewolfs these days. And as i say fuck the new shit this Zombie Eater is sticking with the classics.
In my book "The Howling" was the first good werewolf flick to come along. And that is why it is my 8th choice of a horror movie to watch on halloween. Cause it is a one of kind classic. And i can't belive im the first to write a review on it. I guess some of you so called horror fans don't know your horror to good 'Or you just don't like werewolf flicks. If that is the case well then more power to you cause i love a good werewolf flick and thats just what "The Howling" is. Good is not even the word to use for it. It is excellent.
This movie marks the spot when the werewolf genre was taken to a different level. Leaveing behind what was once considered to be werewolfs, you know how old werewolfs use to look kinda like Grizzly Adams well "The Howling" takes the ole facial hair thing to a different level. What we get here is not some bearded weirdo that tries to act like a retarded beast. We get real hellhounds that sometimes walks on all forelegs and that will stop at nothing to rip the flesh off of any mans soul.
I must say that the year 1981 was the year for great werewolf movies. That year the horror movie world gave birth to two of the best werewolf filcks ever made in the history of horror movie makeing. The two im talking about is the one i am now reviewing and "American Werewolf in London". What makes "The Howling" so excellent? you might ask well just read on and learn as i touch upon the basics.
As for the Acting it is okay. It is nothing i want to talk too much about i saw a few familiar faces that i recognized from other films. As for my favorite character it would have to be the sexy werewolf chick. And when i say sexy !!Damn!! do i mean it and before it is all over with we get to see every part of her sexy nude body that is something im sure all you bitchhounds wont mind seeing. The Special FX is what makes "The Howling" stand out so much back in 1981 the werewolf quality to this film was something great the world had yet to see before. What we where treated to is top notch werewolves that look almost life like. Truthfuly everything in the Special FX shop is well done. There is nothing in this film that should be redone. One of my favorite parts in this movie is the sex scene. You see the sexy werewolf chick and a dude going at it at night in the woods. *And yes this is the part you get to see everything her body has to offer*. As soon as you see that the moon is falling full you are treated to an orgasem of a werewolf transformation that looks very fucking kool.
Now to the last of the basics im going to touch on "The Howling" is based on a novel by Gary Brandner that i've yet to read. So i can't tell you how well adapted it is. Now im going to fill you in on what this monster of a story is about. In Los Angeles we meet up with a lady by the name of Karen White. She is a popular reporter that has had an bad experience with a killer while trying to catch him. The killer Eddie Quist leaves her traumatized with some bad memories and a lot of bad dreams to be had. Karen White's psychologist thinks it will do her some good to get out of town for a while and try to forget some of the bad shit that happened to her. He recommends her to take a trip to The Colony up the Northern California coast. Both Karen White and her husband agrees that the trip might be worth takeing. When they arrive they are greeted by some very odd acting folks. As the day rolls into the fog riden night they both hear strange sounds. Somewhere in the dark foggy night there is a shewolf that lustes a sexual desire to turn Karen White's husband into a monster. Karen White soon learns that The Colony's folks are not folks at all. They are flesh craveing beast that wants to turn her life into something more traumatizeing then any killer in the world could do.
Over all i give "The Howling" a 10 cause its a classic. And a sure pleasure for anyone who whats to watch a werewolf flick on halloween. So if a werewolf flick is what your seeking to watch on halloween look no further then "The Howling" . Time for you to die out again. Till my 7th review is born RIP
