District 9 Review
Written by: alex1176 "District 9" is a film of many forms. It starts out like a mocumentary version of "Alien Nation", morphs into Cronenberg's "The Fly" (no pun intended) and than strangely becomes "Iron Man" for the climax. The movie (produced by Peter Jackson) is also the closest thing to a filmed adapation of the XBOX 360 game "Prototype". It's a very well-made allegory about South Africa's apatheid past; both intense and very gory. The only problem I had with the movie is when the screenplay calls for the protagonist to stop "changing" to be an action hero. Other than that, it's a great debut for director Neil Blomkamp. He may just be the next James Cameron. The movie's 30 million budget was put to very good use. The CGI aliens (that are straight out of the "Star Wars" prequels) are superb creations and the astounding action scenes absolutely blow away Bay's from "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen". That movie was crap. "District 9" is the most thrilling sci-fi/action film in ages. It's up there with "Aliens" and "Predator". And while I wouldn't want a sequel, that's a given in today's day and age. If "Saw" and "The Descent" can get one, "District 9" will too. The acting by the cast, especially by the lead Shalto Copley (who's actually a producer, not a professional actor) is very convincing. He plays a white South African government employee who doesn't have a very good day; to say the least. In the beginning of the film, he's given the unwanted task of evicting aliens from the slums. And by the end, he's "Rambo" or Tony Stark, one of the two. This movie gels all sorts of genre together. You get a mocumentary, a horror film, an action film and a sci-fi flick complete with gangsters, a voodoo lady, an evil government agency and aliens. It's all very crazy, but Blomkamp holds it all together in one very consistent package. This is a cult hit that ranks up there with "Blade Runner".
