Martyrs (2008) Review
Written by: Gardenofstone10
Ladies and gentlemen, I am going to say this only because it doesn't happen often.....I'm deeply bothered by this movie and almost sick to my stomach. At one point, I got dizzy. I have been watching horror movies for 23 years now and this is on a list of 3 or 4 movies that make me react this way.
That being said, this movie is a great, great movie.
Plot:
It's in French, so I'm not remembering the characters names....but this one girl was tortured as a girl and escaped from this house where she was being held. 15 years later, she and another girl come back and just raise hell at the people living in the house. Of course, it doesn't end there.
There is some operation that goes on in the house that Martyrs, or witnesses, come to see transfiguration or seeing the light when they are about to die. SO MESSED UP from then on.
Now, there are a few parts of the movie where what goes on makes sense. Not justified, but you understand how bringing such absolute pain and agony to these young girls, helps them see the light or God if you will. To see someone carve open their wrist, or completely skinned, though......would make me far away from religion.
The amount of pure brutal in this movie is high. It's a raw, in your face style that the French are good at. I'm sure you all remember High Tension, this is shot similar but better.
The good thing about this movie is that in the style it was shot, it would have sucked to have a twist ending....so instead of that, we get an utterly sad and gloom ending. Dreary, damp and lonely are how I'm feeling after seeing this one. I would recommend it to anyone out there who can sit through a foreign film. (I know some people who hate having to not only watch the movie, but read it). Peace
