Re-Animator (1985) Review

9 out of 10 Skulls

This movie was made 1 year before I was born and I've gone until now without seeing it.  After hearing from person after person how amazing this movie is, I found a copy and watched it.

Plot:

Medical student Herbert West finds a serum that brings the dead back to life aka reanimation.  However, he doesn't know the proper dosage to give.  As we see with animals and humans, it can put them into an uncontrollable violent rage.

Dan is a medical student.  Megan is the Dean's daughter.  They are lovers and become roommates with Herbert.  Finding his experiments crazy, they get freaked out, that is...until they find out it actually works.

All the while, Dr Hill is trying to steal the serum from Herbert.  Throw in a decapitation and a talking head and you've got yourself this cult classic.

So many things about this movie grabbed me but the one that I loved was the obvious homage to Bernard Herrmann, the guy who scored Psycho.

The feeling of this movie was a back and forth battle from serious horror movie to campy fun.  I read somewhere it's a mix between The Evil Dead and The Howling.  I totally agree with that.  You have a talking head and obviously, a serum that reanimates the dead to make it that cheese/campy feel.  Then we have a personal struggle with the father/daughter and then the climatic zombie filled morgue scene.

The acting was fantastic.  Specifically Herbert West aka Jeffrey Combs.  He was creepy and nerdy as all hell but by the end of the movie, was the guy you'd trust.

All in all, I'm pissed at myself I didn't discover this sooner but better late than never.  I love this movie.  I will find and buy this movie.  I suggest nothing short for you.  Peace.
