The Fly (1986) Review

Before I get to review the movie, let me state why I did a 10 out of 10. I like to reserve this for movies that change the way I look at cinema. Movies that will forever and always stand out in my head. This is one of those. Sci Fi horror films are my favorite types of horror next to slashers. It involves though, good acting, good direction, a good script and above all, some level of "could that really happen? Maybe". This has all of those.
The movie has Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis....two amazing, amazing, amazing actors. Jeff is a scientist who catches the interest of one journalist, in Geena Davis. He's creating a new invention....teleportation pods. After a couple of unsuccessful tries, he realizes that he needs to reprogram the pods to recognize flesh.
After getting a baboon to be unharmed in a successful transportation, he tries it on himself. Of course, a common housefly slips in and is transported with him. Over the next few days, Jeff becomes...THE FLY. The rest is history, my friends.
Believe it or not, I have never seen this movie. It was made the year I was born, 86, and it's just now getting to me....one of life's greatest mysteries. I have never seen any of David Cronenberg's movies either. I got two things out of the way today.
The quality of film was the first thing I noticed. The second was the big 80s hair that Goldblum and Davis sported. Sexy. On top of science fiction and on top of horror, this movie does a nice balancing act of a romance as well. We see Davis and Goldblum slowly fall in love then slowly out because....well, who can really love a human sized fly?
My favorite part is it never reached that level of cheesy that would hurt the integrity of the movie. So in the midst of the 80s explosion of creature effects, The Fly stands above them all. Buy it, watch it, love it, hell, write a better review than I. I love this movie. Peace.
