My Super Psycho Sweet Sixteen Review
Written by: Suspiria_89
My Super Psycho Sweet Sixteen is slasher movie gold. I wasn't expecting to see any thing good come out of a made for MTV movie. But I was pleasantly surprised. It is by no means a masterpiece, but it's one hell of a fun slasher movie. Complete with all the normal slasher movie characters, stupid dialogue, and a few awesome kills, My Super Psycho Sweet Sixteen is one of the best slasher movies of the last ten years.
Plot: Madison Penrose has been spoiled her entire life and now her sweet sixteen is quickly approaching. She decides she wants to have her big party at the Rollerdome that has been shutdown for ten years due to several vicious murders. But she convinces her parents to open the place back up. To no ones surprise the party is crashed by a psychotic killer dressed as a Knight. Pretty soon all of her friends are being hacked up and she might be next.
If you mixed together Mean Girls, Prom Night and Gutterballs you would get this movie. Now, with that being said, this movie has almost nothing in common with Gutterballs. The only reason I mentioned it is because the Rollerdome setting reminded me of the bowling alley setting in Gutterballs. And that is a good thing. The Rollerdome setting is perfect for a slasher movie. And thats just one of the good things about the movie. The kills are surprisingly good for a made for T.V. movie. In fact, there a lot better than most PG-13 horror movie kills, and better than some R rated horror movie kills. We have a few stabbing, slit throats, a pretty brutal beating scene and one VERY awesome decapitaion. And all of them are done the old fashioned way. There might have been a little CGI in one scene, but it wasn't to bad. The kills were fun, but the main thing that made the movie so good was the directing. Jacob Gentry did a fantastic job directing and Thomas Bingham(cinematographer) did a great job with the lighting. The lighting in several scenes reminded me of the lighting in the movie Suspiria. A lot of different colors that have great visual effects. I would love to see the two work together again. Another thing I liked about the movie is the characters. There is a lot of character development, almost to much. The makers do a great job of making us hate and like some the characters. The ending was also pretty good. Simple, yet satisfying.
My Super Psycho Sweet Sixteen was a really fun slasher flick but it does have a few problems. The acting isn't anything great, but it's good enough. There was also a few scenes where I thought the camera was a little to shaky. But the biggest problem is the soundtrack. There was way to much pop and rap for my likings. But it was realistic and it fit into the movie, and I like the song "Miss Murder" that was at the ending of the movie.
Now, I know what some of you are probably thinking. "He gave Wrong Turn 3 a bad review but he gave this movie a good review?" Well, thats because this movie doesn't take itself serioulsy. There is some really good black humor in this movie and it has a fun atmosphere. That, in my opinion, is what makes a good slasher movie. I'm not saying I don't like serious slasher movies, but it helps when the movie isn't so serious.
Overall My Super Pscyho Sweet Sixteen is a fun slasher movie with some good kills and a great sense of humor. If you're a fan of slasher movies I highly recommend you check it out when it comes to DVD. Hopefully they will release a uncut version.
