Dawn of the Dead (2004) Review

10 out of 10 Skulls

I can't believe I have not reviewed this movie.  Having just watched it for the at least 7th time, I am just not getting to the review.

Plot: Just like the original, it starts out with a few signs here and there of what could be some sort of infection.  Then we get one little zombie in the house....then a neighborhood full and before you know it, it's global.

We follow a group of survivors, I'm going to not name them because I don't remember.  They all take refuge in a mall.  Perfect spot to hide from the zombie apocalypse.  Lots of food.  Lots of entertainment.  Lots of space.  Fighting with each other and mending another group of survivors, it becomes clear they are going to die in the mall if they don't put their heads together and think about ways to escape.

A light bulb goes off in Ving Rhames head to put together some buses...beefing them up ready to kill some f'n zombies.  Along the way, a few of the survivors get picked off....the weak ones and a few of the strong ones.  Before you know it, they're riding off into the sunrise.  Until the credit roll and there's a little something in the credits.

Smoke cleared, all said and done...I love this movie.  Very, very few remakes get the same kind of love and admiration that the original gets, but this is one of them.  To a lot of people this one was better than the original.  I cannot say that.  The zombies look more realistic and the gore is way cooler, but that's because this one was made just shy of 30 years after the original.  So much changed in those three decades.

This is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously.  Zack Snyder knew the main focus of this movie was the zombies.  We didn't have too many life changing "let's go for the Oscar" speeches.  We had normal people fighting for survival in a horrible environment.

Big thing about Romero that Snyder picked up on.....it's never called Zombies.  The closest anyone gets to saying that the creatures are zombies is the asshole guy with the boat says they are "deadish".  I think that's cool because it shows the characters are trying to find logic.  Often, it's like a virus.

Summing up, this movie delivers.  If you want action, scares, gore or just a zombie baby, this is the movie that will leave you wanting more and more and more.  A+ movie.  Peace.
