Dead Alive Movie Details: DVD, Theatre Date, News, Trailers & More Dead Alive Review
6 out of 10 Skulls
Written by: MistressOf Horror

Dead Alive:  A story of a man torn between his new found love and his mother turned zombie…  This movie is a dark comedy, a horror and touching love story all rolled into one. Okay, maybe touching love story is pushing it, but who could ever forget the love scene between Father McGruder (Stuart Devenie) and Nurse McTavish (Brenda Kendall)???  and who would have thought Peter Jackson (Lord Of The Rings) directed this ???

The story begins with a trip to Skull Island where the dreaded Sumatran Rat Monkey is smuggled out against the advice of the angry natives.  We get the feeling right off that something is just not right about that monkey.. after all once accidentally bitten the natives have no problem hacking you to pieces…. Fast forward to Lionel (Timothy Balme) on his first date with the local grocery girl, Paquita (Diana Penalver) who has been told by her grandmother and her grandmother's tarot cards,  that this will be her one great love. On their very first date at the zoo they are being followed by Lionel's overbearing and mean Mother (Elizabeth Moody) who does not like the idea of her little boy (and her personal servant) falling for miss Paquita. Of course, Mom ends up getting bit by the sick little rat monkey (who is on exhibit at the zoo) and all hell breaks loose as she becomes one of the Dead Alive and cannot help herself from trying to eat everyone in sight. Each one she bites in turn become the Dead Alive as well.

With plenty of over the top effects and some really NASTY gore it hard to watch some scenes without looking away..  We see old mother dear do some pretty amazing zombie kills.. and even a zombie 'love' baby thrown into the mix

As time goes on it becomes very difficult for Lionel to keep up appearances and continue covering up all the killing . So he enlists the aid of some animal tranquilizers to keep his mother and all her new creations  in line. Finally she ' dies ' and we have a very embarrassing funeral.. and here comes Uncle Les (Ian Watkin) who just wants his piece of the pie. After he uncovers Lionel's nasty little secret he blackmails him into letting him stay with him and throws the party to end all parties. But things really interesting when Lionel accidentally gives the wrong "medicine" to all his Dead Alive friends and instead of finally killing them with poison he kind of jump starts them  with stimulant and sends them into a feeding frenzy to end all feeding frenzies. And of course with Uncle Les' party going on there is plenty on the menu!

It is then up to Lionel and Paquita to try and stay alive and rid themselves of the cursed zombies that are running amuck. With some of the most hysterical and goriest moments ever caught on film - including a vengeful anus - the conclusion of this film is one not to be missed.
