Daybreakers Review
Written by: alex1176 The first horror film of the decade derives from 1998's "Blade". Directed by the Spiereg brothers and released by Lions Gate, "Daybreakers" is an extremely stylish take on the vampire genre. It depicts 2019 as a year in which humans are nearly extinct. As a result, the bloodsuckers who make up most of the world's population are starving. They also de-volve into bat-like creatures due to the lack of blood. It's a world that Blade himself feared would happen. In away, the movie works better as a sequel to "Blade II" more than the misfire that was "Blade: Trinity". The vampire hunter in this film, however, isn't a badass, but an everyman played by Willem Dafoe who has major fun with the role. He is Lionel Cormac, an ex-vampire who goes by the nickname "Elvis". He along with his band of human survivors enlist the help of Edward Cullen. I mean Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke), a vampire scientist who is trying to devise a blood substitute for a pharmacutical CEO played by Sam Neill. The veteran actor (Jurassic Park) plays the role of the main badguy similar to the way he did as the grown up Damien in "The Final Conflict" (1983). He's a soft spoken leader who schemes his way to his goals. Naturally, he gets what's coming to him. The movie's futuristic urban scenes are shot in a high-contrast, bleached out color that recalls the metropolis of Les Wiseman's "Underworld". However, it's much more entertaining. There are no Shakespearean-esque family fueds; just lots of thrills, gore and action. The gore is a major highlight in horror films and the Spierig brothers don't disappoint. If you loved the first two "Blade" films, than you'll be familar with what "Daybreakers" brings to the table. It may not be an original take on vampires, but it's stylish and entertaining and that's all that really matters. This is a community member review and not a staff member review.
