Piranha 3-D (2009) Movie Details: DVD, Theatre Date, News, Trailers & More Piranha 3D Review
8 out of 10 Skulls
Written by: Suspiria_89

When I first saw the trailers for Piranha 3D I was skeptical for a couple of reasons. I was mainly concerned about two things. The CGI and the converted 3D. But after reading nothing but good reviews I knew I had go out and see it and today I finally got my chance. As you can tell by my rating, I wasn’t disappointed.

Plot: After an earthquake under Lake Victoria, thousands of prehistoric piranha are released upon a bunch of spring breakers. Blah Blah, Blah, so on and so fourth,…….. just show me some boobs!

Piranha 3D is a onslaught of flesh ripping mayhem unlike anything ever before. It is modern day exploitation at it’s best. This is what American horror is suppose to look like. If you want art and story I suggest you look elsewhere. If you want to see ridiculous amounts of blood, gore and nudity I highly recommend you see Piranha 3D.

Ever since I saw the remake of the classic horror film The Hills Have Eyes, I have said several times that Alexandre Aja is one of the most promising directors in modern horror. After watching Piranha 3D I stand by that statement. Piranha might not be a award winning masterpiece, but it’s one hell of a entertaining film that thoroughly delivers plenty of gore and nudity. I’ll get to the gore and blood later, but first I’ve got to mention the characters. Piranha features a wide variety of characters that help move the movie along at a very fast pace. Some of them aren’t developed but all of them are entertaining and most are fun to look at. Especially Kelly Brook and Riley Steele; and since we are on the subject, I have to mention that there’s a bizarre underwater softcore porn scene that I guarantee will please you if you enjoy full frontal female 3D nudity half as much as I do. Thank you Aja, thank you.

The characters and nudity were both great, but the gore and violence is what really held my attention. We see a good bit of limb removal, decapitation, people torn in half, eyeball gouging, face removal and one scene involving a regurgitated penis that words can’t describe. You’ll have to see it to believe it. That’s not all of the gore, just a few prime examples.

One thing I was concerned about was the converted 3D. Most converted 3D films look terrible but Piranha is an exception. For the most part the 3D looked great and made the movie even more enjoyable. Some of the more notable 3D scenes involve drunken girl vomit and said penis mutilation scene.

I enjoyed Piranha but it does have it’s flaws. The CGI in some of the scenes looked a little too cartoonish and the 3D made the bad effects stand out more. I’ve certainly seen worse CGI though. It’s also worth mentioning that there’s a lack of character development and some of the acting is poor. But those minor flaws don’t stop Piranha from being the best horror film of the summer.

Overall Piranha is a campy, bloody horror flick that knows what it is and it doesn’t try to be anything else. Go into the movie expecting to see nothing but a entertaining gore film and you won’t be disappointed.
