The Ward Review
Written by: DirtyGirl
John Carpenter said The Ward is an Old School Horror Movie from an Old School Director. The Ward is set in the 60s at a State Mental Hospital. It opens with Kristen (Amber Heard) being arrested for setting fire to a farmhouse. She is transported to a Mental Hospital, where she meets all the girls on her Ward. We soon find out there is a supernatural force haunting the girls.
The movie is an old fashioned character piece. We get to know all the girls very well, and they all have distinct personalities. The nurse will definitely remind you of Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The scenes in the hallways of the hospital, definitely reminded me of Halloween 2. However the score was not done by Carpenter and it really suffered because of it, since that is one of his trademarks. The Hospital itself is one of the main characters, it is depressing and realistic. (Shot at the Eastern State Hospital in Spokane, Washington.)
There were some good jump scares and a some good kill scenes. There is a twist ending, but I have to say we have seen this twist before! I wont say which movie because spoiling a Carpenter movie should be a crime!
It was nice to enjoy a good old school horror that didn't rely on CGI. When it comes out in the theatres, I would see it again!
