PLOT: A young college student by the name of Samantha Hughes is looking for an apartment. The landlady (Dee Wallace of Cujo and The Howling!) generously tells Samantha that she can pay the first month's rent since she cannot afford a security deposit. Samantha is desperatley trying to make some money, so she takes a babysitting job. Samantha's best friend drives her all the way out to the country where the house is located. Once there......(Watch the film to find out the rest!)

The House of the Devil is a good little satanic occult flick. Director Ti West does a great homage to the early 80's horror films. The big yellow font for the credits, the close ups, the freeze frames, the 80's dance music in the background, and the sometimes grainy type picture really gives you a solid setting. Ti West recreated the whole 80's culture very well with this film.

I do however have my complaints. It takes a whole 3/4 of the movie until it really starts to heat up. There could have been much more horror happening at about the half mark of the film. I also felt the final confrontation between Samantha and the evil Satanists was a little weak.

Some scenes were really well done, well shot, and especially well acted. But the movie takes too long to get started, and I was left with the feeling that there should have been a bit more confrontation. It took 3/4 of the movie to build up the suspense (and it was built well) and the final "battle", shall we say, left me wanting it to be more drawn out. It just went too quickly.

The final ending, however, was a nice touch. It leaves you perhaps a bit confused.....but it leaves you with your imagination. I think a sequel should be in order.

I give The House Of The Devil a 7.5/10 rating and a letter grade of a B-. I say give it a watch. If you see it cheap somewhere on DVD, pick it up.
