A List of New Zombie Movies Worth Watching

Herner Klenthur

The zombie genre is full of so many classic movies we often forget that time has not stood still and that new gems are arriving almost every year. I am in my early 30’s which means I am a die-hard fan of classic zombie movies like Lucio Fulci’s ZOMBIE and George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and of course the greatest horror movie of all time Night of the Living Dead.

As much as I love the classics there are a ton of new zombie movies that have been released over the last few years that are as equally creative and deserving of fanfare as the early classics. This list is my tribute to the best modern / new zombie movies that everyone should see. I have specifically tried to focus on newer zombie movies and a mix of styles so although you may not love every film on my list you should be able to find plenty to enjoy. So let’s get to it. The best new zombie movies worth watching, in no particular order.

Stalled is a British zombie movie where the entire premise is shot in a tiny bathroom stall and although that may not sound very exciting I assure you Stalled is one of the true gems of the modern zombie genre. I recently watched Stalled on NETFLIX and despite its limited budget and resources it packs outstanding cinematography, great direction and enough classic horror homage’s to make any horror nerd grin.

Directed by Christian James Stalled stars Dan Palmer and is the story of a man who is trapped in a bathroom stall during a Christmas holiday party turned zombie apocalypse. The marketing team behind stalled might have failed to build a buzz for the film but the film is still very much worth your time.

Cockneys vs. Zombies

Once again I defer to the Brit’s for another great zombie flick and of course it’s another zombie comedy. This go around I present Cockneys vs. Zombies a comedy directed by Matthias Hoene and written by James Moran and Lucas Roche. Cockneys vs. Zombies is about a bunch of wannabee tough guys, a few real tough guys and their grandparents who unit to survive the apocalypse.

Set in the East End of London this British zombie comedy is funny, ballsy and full of heart that also offers one hell of a cast including Alan Ford. You will know Alan Ford from all kinds of British gangster films including Snatch and Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels.

Cockneys vs Zombies UK Poster

Ahhh Zombies / Wasting Away

Wasting Away is a really fantastic movie that came out of left field. I had heard very little buzz about the film and the last thing I expected was a Return of the Living Dead caliber zombie comedy. It has an outstanding original concept, great production values and is from start to finish a well-polished and hilarious zombie movie.

La Horde

The French do horror right and Zombie movies are not exempt from this fact. La Horde is a brutal and visceral zombie movie with a really cool concept. A group of the most vicious criminals in France go head to head with the police in a bloody war in an apartment complex only to find things take a twist when zombies attack. Two very clear and distinct enemies must team to fight off the undead while watching each other with one eye.

Resident Evil

Resident Evil has spawned a whole series of horrendous sequels and 3D action debacles but that does not negate the fact the original movie is a great film. I expected very little when I bought the film out of a discount bin but it has become one of my all-time favorite action-zombie movies.

Dawn of the Dead

George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead is by far one of the greatest zombie movies ever made. When it was announced that Zack Snyder would remake it I was not concerned. Zack Snyder is the genius behind 300 and the thought of him doing a remake of Dawn had me excited and Zack did not disappoint. He paid homage to the original but made his own movie and did so in spectacular style. Dawn of the Dead is one of the few truly great remakes of all time.

The Dead

The Dead is the Gone with the Wind of zombie movies. I should clarify though it is by no means boring, doesn’t have southern accents and is not about cotton fields. The Dead is an epic zombie adventure set in Africa as a lone man tries to escape the Dead and find his way home to his family in a country he does not know, Africa.

Rambbock Berlin Undead

Berlin Undead is a stylized foreign zombie movie about a man caught in his ex-girlfriend’s apartment complex as he works to survive a zombie attack. It has a love angle, has plenty of intensity and its stark visual style in many ways reminds me of REC without the point of view which I am not a fan of. Berlin Undead is an unexpected treat that every fan of zombie films should watch.

Dog House

Women are dangerous creatures and nothing exemplifies this more than Dog House. The story is just outright hilarious with enough carnage and brutality to please even the biggest gore hounds. The concept is a group of buddies head to a small town for a night of drinking and discover everyone is missing as the result of an apocalyptic outbreak with a twist. Dog House is a movie I have seen at least 20 times and it does not stop being funny.

Dead Heads

Dead Heads is another zombie movie that slipped under the radar with very little fanfare. It’s the story of a man who goes on a cross country trek to find his lost love with a fun twist, he’s a zombie. This indie zombie movie is full of laughs, carnage and great story telling

Dead Snow

Earlier in the week we told you that Dead Snow 2 was finally going to be made and it became one of our most shared news items in a matter of hours. That in itself should tell you something about Dead Snow. This foreign zombie movie has college students, chainsaws, old school horror movie references and Zombie Nazi’s. There is nothing bad you can say about Dead Snow let’s hope the sequel is half as good.

 Dead Snow- Nazi Zombie Group

Pontypool is an indie Canadian zombie movie that much like Dead Snow is a beautiful film wrapped in a truly unique story. Pontypool plays out like a stage play and for me is the closest thing I have seen to George Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead. It has an outstanding cast an original story and a very small environment where it plays out in making the film both excellent and terrifying.

Zombieland has 32 rules and all 32 rules spell awesome. Zombieland may have had a relatively unknown writing team behind it but it will go down in history as one of the greatest zombie movies of all time. Zombieland 2 is coming and it will have big shoes to fill. Zombieland is the story of teen romance, loss, love and zombie’s zombie’s zombies.

zombieland rules

Shaun of the Dead

With Zombieland out of the way we might as well get to Shaun of the Dead the greatest zombie comedy since Return of the Living Dead. It’s the story of two stoner slackers who wake up one day to discover the whole world has gone to hell in a hand bag. Shaun must find his girl, get his mom and get to the Winchester bar where they can hold out the apocalypse eating bar nuts and drinking wellies. A truly hilarious movie that put Nick Frost and Simon Pegg on the map.

Mutants is another example of great French horror and easily matches any of the other films on this list. It’s the story of a pregnant woman and her husband who are caught out in the open during an outbreak that turns people into voracious mutants. You could make the argument much like 28 Days Later that this is not a zombie movie but given the ingredients of the movie I am arguing it is. Mutants is stark, brutal and absolutely fantastic!

I am a sucker for quirky comedies and FIDO is one of the best. FIDO is set in an alternate 60’s where mankind has managed to put down a zombie outbreak and turned the zombies into domesticated help. It’s a story of a Boy and his dog only the dog is a zombie and yes… it’s got lots of carnage, laughs and zombie action. FIDO is an intelligent zombie comedy that pays homage to many classic films

Fido, Canadian Zombie Film

REC is one of the few good point of view films to garner recognition from horror fans. I am not a fan of the found footage format or the point of view angle but REC you can’t help but love. Firefighters are dispatched to an apartment complex and things quickly spiral out of control as they find themselves quarantined and under assault by an unknown and vicious adversary.

The Crazies (The remake), Hide and Creeo (small, but funny indie movie), Planet Terror, REC 2 & 3, and Slither.

        • HorrorMovies January 19, 2013 at 10:56 pm

rec 2 and 3 i never bothered to see. Slither for me isnt a zombie movie. Hide And Creep was excellent.

      2. Devon Olson January 15, 2013 at 12:57 am

Thanks for the list. I have seen most of them but there were two or three that I haven’t seen.

        • HorrorMovies January 26, 2013 at 3:54 pm

you are quite welcome. Tks for reading.

      3. Jeff Carson January 15, 2013 at 4:46 pm

How’d I miss Aahh Zombies! Looks like a really funny premise!

        • HorrorMovies January 26, 2013 at 3:54 pm

its a REALLY good movie Jeff. one of my all time favs.

      4. shiyongseng January 16, 2013 at 4:31 pm

        La Horde was horribly stupid.

        • HorrorMovies January 26, 2013 at 3:54 pm

really why did you think so?

        • phantom August 29, 2013 at 2:04 am

          I thoroughly enjoyed it

      5. Coby Villegas January 31, 2013 at 2:58 pm

Very good list. I don’t agree 100%, but very good list. I have to share…

      6. Tony February 10, 2013 at 9:26 am

Plane Dead. You wouldn’t think Zombies on a Plane would work but all in all it was a decent film. And another reason I won’t fly LOL.
Check out Braindead as well. It is considered one of the goriest films of all time.
I believe that Rec isn’t really zombies. In the 2nd film you learn what they really are.

      7. Joey April 7, 2013 at 11:43 pm

how are the return of the living dead sequels?

(Just saw that they existed in my google browser suggestions)

      8. Chris Gauld April 15, 2013 at 7:37 pm

Juan of the dead, if you’ve not seen it get it asap dude

        • Herner Klenthur April 15, 2013 at 10:55 pm

Really want to see JUAN of the Dead. Publicist would not give us a review copy and its not on VOD or DVD around here. Real bummer.

      9. Jon April 18, 2013 at 6:16 pm

        Awesome list!

      10. ZaneP April 24, 2013 at 7:26 pm

Dude love the list, its nice to read a post like urs in our “age group”. Don’t think I will watch the one in africa because I live there but that snow looks good.
Also just one thing, REC I think was originally done by the Italians which for me was better than the remake.
Shawn of the dead is still the best…..
        Thanks again

      11. ZaneP April 25, 2013 at 7:38 am

What about “I am legend” and “Resedent Evil” are they not Zombie movies as well?

        • Garabaldi June 7, 2013 at 5:00 am

I Am Legend is a vampire movie (well, it’s a silly movie based on a brilliant vampire novella.)

      12. Kati May 1, 2013 at 6:23 pm

Definitely check out Cockneys vs Zombies. It has a Shaun of the Dead kinda feel. Very funny.

        • ZaneP May 2, 2013 at 7:23 pm

I will check it out and let you know/

      13. Jennifer May 2, 2013 at 2:57 pm

Hi! I don’t think I Am Legend is a zombie movie….their more vampires, right? : ) like the list thanks!! I’m gonna get the African one tonight

        • james June 1, 2013 at 3:53 am

Hi I was just wondering where do you buy these movies that are.. I hate to say it but kinda unpopular I just wanna know where I can buy or get them

      14. ZaneP May 2, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Hope you get nightmares of them eating this poor white guy in Africa….. :)

I sat and watch I am legend again, if you think of it they are kind off a mixed bread.
In the beginning they start off all Zombie like, No feeling and emotions, crave fresh meat but only come out at night. they huddle like Zombies but later develop a “human” maybe a Vampire side with emotions.
maybe the writer was bored and redefined the whole out look of Zombies….like Twilight and the sparkly vampires that love.
He created a “ZOMPIRE” that sounds wicked.

      15. 00700360jon May 18, 2013 at 8:54 pm

Juan of the Dead was hilarious! Should be on here/

      16. Chris Druet May 18, 2013 at 9:49 pm

What about The Revenant? I dug that flick.

      17. The Scripted May 19, 2013 at 6:25 am

The best zombie movie is Dawn of the Dead (2004). Great movie.

        • Herner Klenthur May 19, 2013 at 11:50 am

agree but you did not read the title of the article

        • timmyelliot September 12, 2013 at 8:37 am

I think the author was a little loose with the definition of “new zombie movies”, since Dawn of the Dead (2004) is one of the films listed in the article.

      18. The Scripted May 19, 2013 at 9:20 pm

World War Z is the best new zombie movie coming out.

        • Herner Klenthur May 19, 2013 at 9:21 pm

That is not what this list is about. But that said I humbly disagree. World War Z looks HORRENDOUS

        • Amp July 18, 2013 at 11:23 pm

You obviously don’t know hat the zombie genre is about.

      19. Laurie May 20, 2013 at 2:31 am

World War Z does look horrible. I’m curious as to why they won’t put at least one close up shot of a zombie in the trailer. The trailers i have seen all make the zombies look like swarming ants & the CGI looks like crap. Also, I’m a 33 year old female & a die hard fan of all things zombie. That being said…..why in the hell is Brad Pitt the lead in this movie? I’ve read the book & he never crossed my mind to play that role. I’ll end up watching it anyways, I’m sure. I just can’t say no to a zombie flick lol. Thank u for the list. I’ve seen them all & agree thru & thru. Watching Warm Bodies as i type this. Its a good movie with an awesome concept :-)

        • Herner Klenthur May 20, 2013 at 12:08 pm

The reason we have not seen a close up zombie shot in my humble opinion is because it will piss us off. CGI Zombies that act like ants = FAIL

        • Break November 26, 2013 at 10:58 am

Simply put, you didn’t read the book if you think Brad Pitt couldn’t play the role.
Why? Because the book is a compilation of like 100 different peoples tales on what happened during the Zombie War. That is correct, in the past tense. The character Brad Pitt plays from the books just takes these interviews and basically plays a bit role In the books with little information about himself.
The book itself was horrible and how it received a motion picture release makes no sense whatsoever.
The movie was decent, but it was rated PG13 which made several of the zombie scenes quite ridiculous with no blood being shown.

Long story short, your full of it.

      20. Laurie May 20, 2013 at 2:43 am

It just ended & its great. Zombie movies have a habit of becoming a lil repetitive sometimes & Warm Bodies put a nice new spin on things

      21. Johnny May 20, 2013 at 3:15 am

You have to check out The Battery. A trailer is online and it is starting to win awards. Ain’t it cool news called it one of the best Zombie movies in a long time. I concur. I think it’s coming out on VOD soon. I dunno.

        • misha September 19, 2013 at 7:43 pm

The Battery is one of the greaters of the recent times.

      22. Ash May 20, 2013 at 4:22 pm

Before Dawn. I recent British movie done well on a tiny budget.
My review; coming soon to this site :)

      23. stevo kicks May 21, 2013 at 1:20 am

        warm bodies = twilighting zombies

        • Amp July 18, 2013 at 11:17 pm

No, Friend, It is definitely NOT Twilight. Warm bodies didn’t suck badly acted dicks for almost 3 hours. Same premise though but with zombies. LOL

      24. dan June 2, 2013 at 4:34 am

awesome list! Another great zombie flick that i think is just as awesome is this british flick , Dead Set.

        • Herner Klenthur June 2, 2013 at 3:48 pm

Everyone raves about Dead Set I am so dissapointed i am not able to see it yet.

      25. Chaos June 10, 2013 at 3:13 pm

Pontypool is not a zombie movie in my mind at all.

      26. Heather June 10, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Exit Humanity is so underrated and amazing

      27. frankiedynomite June 13, 2013 at 8:42 am

Since new isn’t really a requirement, or even if the zombies originate from an infection or outbreak, I would then like to suggest Dead Alive, In my mind a true classic zombie flick directed by Peter Jackson. Its funny, clever, disturbing and one of the bloodiest zombie/horror flicks of all time. I know the Walking dead isn’t a movie but for me its just one epic film broken up in different chapters. It also asks the question as to the source or origin of the zombies in their world, it isn’t just a viral outbreak transferred through the blood but will seemingly transform everyone as death becomes the catalyst. So the argument that an outbreak film is not a true zombie film is moot when the end result is a human being becomes a brain slurping, heart chewing, intestine sucking ravenous giant maggot. The only difference is that some move slow and some like to sprint like Richard Pryor with his hair on fire.

      28. Wendy June 26, 2013 at 12:07 am

Dead Alive is a good one. My boyfriend picked it up in a bargain bin. Real bloody, humor, and love.

      29. Amp July 18, 2013 at 11:12 pm

“The Revnant” was a pretty great movie. I recommend checking it out. It should definitley be on this list.

      30. Scott July 22, 2013 at 11:39 am

Kindly note, Africa is a continent and not a country.

      31. usman July 23, 2013 at 2:27 pm

Do you call this old shit to be the new arrival of zombies.
may be 2 or 3 movies are strictly worth watching.
Dawn of the dead, dead snow,
This list needs to be reviewed by highly influenced person, having passionate about zombies new arrivals. Nonetheless, you must put some outstanding stuff to make your list worth watching.

      32. Kaylan August 13, 2013 at 4:35 am

Dead and Breakfast (great Zom Com), Dead Air (similar to Ponty Pool in that most of the movie takes place in a radio station) Zombie Diaries (another found footage one I didn’t enjoy personally but some people did) Happy to see The Horde on here loved, good job on the list.

      33. Christian August 16, 2013 at 2:49 am

What is it that zombie fans have against 28 days/28 weeks? Two of my favorite zombie flicks

      34. Rebecca August 16, 2013 at 6:39 pm

Undead is a great low budget Australian zombie flick. Well worth a look and a giggle

      36. Tommy Doyle September 3, 2013 at 5:04 pm

While I did thoroughly enjoy Pontypool, I have to say that it is NOT a zombie movie, Zombies come back from the dead and feast on the flesh of living humans, Pontypool was more in line of Rage or The Signal, something is driving people crazy causing them to attack people but there is no coming back from the dead or eating flesh, these are everyday joes and Joans going psycho and attacking people, reminds me of the 28 days/weeks/months? films, I like all of your other picks, as an afterthought I was very disappointed in wwz!! anyone else think Bradd Pitt looked bored? like he was going through the motions waiting for his check? just one mans opinion!! Thanks. Tommy D.

        • timmyelliot September 12, 2013 at 8:18 am

For me, Pontypool and the 28days/weeks are zombie films. They hit enough zombie film genre conventions.

I don’t need zombies = Living Dead, since that would also mean many (most?) of the pre-Romero zombies (like the zombies in White Zombie) wouldn’t quite qualify as zombies.

My position has evolved over a few years. I used to take the opposite belief (zombies are slow and undead).

      37. conrad September 6, 2013 at 8:19 am

nice list, have u seen, “the dead”

      38. Ruud Van Tanda September 7, 2013 at 6:23 pm

        Dead Snow – Epic!

      39. timmyelliot September 12, 2013 at 8:25 am

I thought Zombies of Mass Destruction (2009) and (both) Dance of the Dead films were very good (they aren’t related, except by name: one was a 2008 comedy and the other was Tobe Hooper’s 2005 contribution to the Masters of Horror).

I also liked Deadgirl (2008), about two guys who find a zombie and decide to chain her up…

      40. timmyelliot September 12, 2013 at 8:34 am

Yeah, I really didn’t want to like World War Z, especially because it deviated so much from the source material. But, unfortunately, I like zombie films too much and ended up liking the film. Surprisingly, the biggest thing that stuck out for me, was that it was a PG-13 film.

      41. Don Pablo September 17, 2013 at 4:01 pm

I highly recommend “Dead Set”, a British zombie mini-series. U will be surprised how great this is. Big Brother meets zombies. really amazing and solid.

      42. satin March 16, 2014 at 10:59 pm

Return of the living dead 2 and Resident evil 2 which is better than 1

      43. Bassi August 6, 2014 at 2:58 pm

Clad to see Ram block Berlin Undead on the list, I think dead set should be on the list too
, others I like boy eats girl , dance of the dead , really enjoy that too, Also dead before dawn , there Zemon and fido , the under rated of them all , Battlefield Baseball (2003), which a must see

      44. rfclad August 6, 2014 at 5:11 pm

The Battery is the most original zombie movie I have seen in years

      45. aman November 1, 2014 at 3:06 pm

I love to see zombie movies…tell me some most famous zombie movies of all the times

      46. Mikey January 11, 2015 at 5:51 am

        Dead Set is AWESOME!

      47. Zeff September 27, 2015 at 2:15 am

Nice list. Allow me to add.

Dead Set – pretty cool. I watched for free on YouTube. You can get DVD on eBay as well.

World War Z – actually enjoyed it. It was not the greatest but worth your time imo.

Extinction – these are zombies that have adapted over the years in the end that remind me of the creatures in The Decent. Worth checking out for sure.

Wyrmwood – new Austrailian zombie movie. Worth watching though nothing groundbreaking.

Dead and Deader – worth it for a true zombie fan though not first class quality.

Undead or Alive – a Zomedy with Chris Kattan. Actually decent.

The Battery – it’s ok. If you go in not expecting much you will enjoy. Not many zombie kills, more of a friendship story with zombies.

Stakeland – technically vampires but they act more like zombies. I enjoyed it.

Z Nation – this is a TV series’s done by SyFy Chanel but I really am enjoying it. Be warned that the first episode is stupid towards the end. Baby zombies are (should be) harmless – no teeth and can’t walk, how does that work??? But if you can get past that it is pretty cool and has an aspect that hasn’t really been explored yet by others – I won’t spoil it for you here.

      48. scoto 86 January 3, 2016 at 6:33 pm

I can’t believe scanning through all the comments 28 days later was not mentioned once , definitely better than some of the films on the list

      49. Zeffirelli January 4, 2016 at 4:54 pm

28 days/weeks were mentioned a date both good zombie flicks. Another that I watched recently was Dead Rising: Watchtower which was pretty good. There are some stupid things done like in most B movies but it was well done and worth a watch for 1.50 at the box. Another Zombie-ish movie that is worth checking out imo is The Plague. They are not dead just being controlled by someone/thing but to me qualifies to an enjoyable movie. Mentioned before but another in this zombie-ish category worth watching is Slither. Done by the same guy who did the Dawn of the dead remake. Not zombies here but being controlled and do infect others and kill so to me is similar enough. Either way it’s a good flick.

      50. Zeff January 16, 2016 at 3:39 am

Also add Re-Kill and Cooties to the list.

      51. theupandcomingcorey July 15, 2016 at 3:41 pm

Between what is listed and what i’ve found in the comments, this is one of the better lists on the internet. Would love to see the writer update this list :)

Wyrmwood should be on te list.

Yes, I really enjoyed Train to Busan! It is a more serious zombie movie and it is a bit predictable, but enjoyable none-the-less.

I also enjoyed I Am Hero (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3775202/?ref_=nv_sr_1), which dabbled into humor. And then there is one called Tokyo Zombie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451954/?ref_=nv_sr_1) which was definitely stupid-comedy, but I enjoyed that one as well.

Train to Busan is on Netflix now and it is a great movie. Downside is it isn’t in English so you have to read subtitles but it’s well worth it imo. I thought it was better than WWZ. Viral on Netflix is also pretty good. Don’t expect a lot of zombie attacks with that one but good nonetheless.
