Open Grave (2013) Movie Review

Herner Klenthur

Open Grave is  a movie that has just landed on video on demand with a lot of buzz from die-hard genre fans like myself. Typically when movies like this get released with a lot of underground attention from bloggers they end up being a big disappointment. In my completely spoiler free review I will clear things up and let you know if the new horror film Open Grave is worth your $6.99 rental charge or not.

Open Grave is from director  who directed the 2011 found footage horror film ‘Apollo 18’. The film stars the highly under rated and incredibly talented  [ District 9 and Elysium ] who plays a man who wakes up in a pit full of corpses with no memory, and a whole bunch of questions.

He is rescued from the pit by a strange woman who can not speak but leads him back to a house where there are four other people with the same symptoms.  Things quickly spiral out of control as their curiosity on what has happened turns into fear and infighting and eventual violence.

The films cast is top-notch and includes the beautiful unkown and stoic Erin Richards as well as Joseph Morgan [ Immortals] and one of my favorite characters actors Thomas Kretschmann. The casting is incredible and the ensemble performance is the main reason that the film works so well.

In a year filled with remakes, lack luster blockbusters and unneeded found footage horror sequels Open Grave is definitely a gem. Open Grave is by no means perfect and will absolutely not appeal to all horror fans but in a genre that is desperate for originality and new ideas director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego pulls it off.

Open Grave is a slow burn movie to put it politely and at times moves along at a molasses pace but that is all offset by a talented cast, great storytelling and a memorable finale. In Open Grave the emphasis is on the story and its characters so much so that the movie drags at parts but for what it lacks in pace it makes up for in intelligent dialogue, great acting and outstanding storytelling.

Open Grave has really smart writing with excellent editing and that is what makes the film work despite its lengthy sequences of background character development. The filmmakers and screenwriters clearly were not afraid to take a risk in appealing to a more mature audience but I think it works!

Open Grave is not a movie I would necessarily watch twice but I would encourage horror fans who enjoy intelligent psychological thrillers to give it a look. In an industry where we are all bitching and moaning about a lack of originality Open Grave brings plenty to the table and the concept has definitely not been done before!

If you are a fan of movies like Pontypool, Carriers or Right At Your Door then Open Grave is right up your alley. If your tastes are more mainstream and you need incredible gore or fast paced action from scene to scene then Open Grave may let you down.

If you are like me and enjoy all aspects of the genre its a safe bet you will find Open GRave compelling and unique.

For me Open Grave despite its pace is the most original horror movie of 2013 and one of the best psychological thrillers since Adam Green’s monumental film SIRAL. It does offer a different take on a beaten story. And like you say in the review, it has a great cast. I liked it, more mystery then horror thou. But not the best I saw :)
