SXSW Award Winners Announced

Jason McDonald

While horror didn’t win big at the annual South by Southwest film festival, it did manage to nab a couple of notable trophies.

First off, director Andrew Zuchero took home the award for “Best Midnight Short” for his short film The Apocalypse which you can watch below.  I could describe it, but I think it’s best to go in blind.  It’s not particularly scary, but it is pleasantly gruesome.

Kiss of the Damned also nabbed an award for “Excellence in Poster Design” which is featured below the video.  The poster was created by Akiko Stehrenberger.  Kiss of the Damned is directed by Xan Cassavetes.  In the film, beautiful vampire Djuna (Josephine de La Baume) tries to resist the advances of the handsome, human screenwriter Paolo (Milo Ventimiglia), but eventually gives in to their passion. When her troublemaker sister Mimi (Roxane Mesquida) unexpectedly comes to visit, Djuna’s love story is threatened, and the whole vampire community becomes endangered…

Congratulations to the two winners! This Saturday they’ll announce the winners for the Audience Awards, so hopefully we’ll see more horror films nabbing a win this weekend.
