Terminator 5 : Tom Hardy As John Connor, More Plot Details

Terminator 5 : Tom Hardy As John Connor, More Plot DetailsThis last week it has been a busy time at the rumor mill as some serious casting and plot details explode over Terminator 5. Today is no different as some brand new John Connor casting surfaces that should please everyone.

I have long been a fan of the Terminator films and I have waited for somebody to pick up the mantle and do the franchise right for years. Christian Bale’s Terminator Salvation started out strong but fell apart quickly and shortly after the franchise rights went into limbo.

Fortunately Annapurna has scooped up the Terminator movie franchise and are ready to make a proper go of it with the help of Skydance and Paramount!

As noted many months ago the upcoming ‘Terminator (2015)’ is not a remake or a sequel it is a complete reboot telling a completely new story using the same iconic characters.

Earlier in the week we told you that director Alan Taylor ( Thor 2, Game of Thrones ) is looking to cast a young Sarah Connor and a young John Connor and today we have more updates.

The plot for the new Terminator 5 will reportedly see a young John Conner go back in time to save his mother Sarah Conner which is why they are reportedly looking to cast a John Conner and Sarah Connor that are about the same age, 20.

The women up for the role of Sarah Connor are  Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones , Brie Larson and Margot Robbie.

If the director Alan Taylor is even remotely loyal to his past cast and crew it’s very likely Emilia Clarke will get the role. Emily Clarke is a great choice for Sarah Connor because she is known for playing a strong character on Game of Thrones and can carry the role of the rough and tumble Sarah Connor but she can also transition nicely from ‘victim’ to ‘ass-kicking terminator killer’.

Not to dismiss the other choices so quickly but it also helps that Emilia has a built-in fan base that will draw viewers to the franchise in droves.

Terminator 5 : Tom Hardy As John Connor, More Plot Details

As far as John Conner goes the top choice according to The Hollywood reporter is Tom Hardy and frankly this is outstanding news. Tom Hardy is a bad ass and a stud who showed he could carry a movie with his role of BANE in The Dark Knight Rises. Tom Hardy is an incredibly talented British actor who could easily play John Connor but the one hitch here is I am not sure he can play a ’20 something’ given he is in his late 30′s casting some doubt on the storyline that has been rumored online.

We also know from THR that they are also looking to cast a young Kyle Reese making the plot and timeline of Terminator 5 all the more interesting and complicated.

The last big question in the new Terminator franchise is who will play The Terminator?

The last plot we heard revealed Arnold would return but that the film would be set in the 50′s. This clearly is not going to happen if Sarah Connor and John Connor are 20. We also heard that The Rock would play a new kind of Terminator which got mixed reactions with half our readers loving the idea the other half throwing a tantrum ( me being one of the tantrum throwers ).

Now it would seem that according to THR Arnold will indeed be playing a Terminator  as was long-expected and he will be repeating the plot line of Terminator 2. THR is reporting that Arnold’s Terminator character will be sent back in time to protect a young Sarah Connor merging the stories of the original Terminator which saw The Terminator attack a 20 something Sarah Connor with the second film which saw Arnold’s character go back to protect a young John Connor.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has stated for years that he will be returning to the role that made him famous and there has been some great speculation on that role for years. William Wisher who wrote the original Terminator with James Cameron had a plot for two more Terminator movies that promised a massive shock twist even bigger then the twists of Terminator 2 that saw the villain return as saviour.

It will be interesting to see how the writers set up a plot for Terminator 5 that includes Sarah Connor at the age of 20, John Connor at the same age and a Terminator time travelling presumably to snap them both up and protect them.

As much as I find these constant reboots of franchises getting old I have to concede I am somewhat hopeful for the upcoming Terminator movie primarily because they have a young and talented production team at Annapurna and Skydance and two really talented members on their writing team.

Writer Laeta Kalogridis is a legend in my books having written Shutter Island one of the greatest psychological thrillers of this generation. Patrick Lussier who also has writing duties is not as well-known for his writing but has been an editor on a ton of significant films including Apollo 18, Scream and Highlander.

What do you think of Terminator 5? Where would you like to see the story go? Who would you like to see play John Connor?

This franchise is finished….this plot is dead in the water!

      14. Katie Kopp November 12, 2013 at 1:45 pm

So utterly unnecessary. Why can’t filmmakers come up with original ideas instead of beating an old one to death. They should’ve stopped after the second one.

      15. Lynne Larion November 12, 2013 at 1:49 pm

        and he’s hot, hot hot…lol

      16. Ryan November 12, 2013 at 1:53 pm

I think Tom Hardy is a great choice…but how can then cast a 36 year old to play a 20 year old…this isn’t Beverly Hills 90210 and he isn’t cast to play Andrea Zuckerman

      17. Joel GrungeMartinez November 12, 2013 at 2:03 pm

thats what I hate about those movies, they take so long in m the making of it that they always have to change the main characters, the main story is awesome, but hey its a little annoying the changing of characters all the time

      18. Jessica Hodson November 12, 2013 at 2:04 pm

Love the thought of another Terminator installment, but not sure I like the “change in story”. I feel they have some more stuff they can do from the original story thread. Like the choice in actors if that’s who they’re going to get.

      21. Bob Mikkelsen November 12, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Even when I really hated his Bane incarnation, I think he’s a very good actor. But, I insist, one of the main problems with the Terminator franchise (if we can call it “franchise) is the lack of continuity…

        Yes!
