Ten Most Disturbing Horror Movies: You Will Squirm!

There are some movies out there that aren’t necessarily scary, but so disturbing that you can’t stop yourself from squirming around in your seat. Whether they’re excessively bloody and gory, or just plain gross, these films will have you gagging and having to peek through your fingers just to make it through the end. They might not keep you up at night, but these movies will make you very grateful that you’re not in them.

10. Cabin Fever

Personally, one of my favorites. Scary? Not necessarily, but the thought of being overcome by a flesh eating virus is far from comforting. And let’s not forget about that cringe-worthy shaving scene.

9. House of 1000 Corpses

Another film that I wouldn’t say is necessarily scary, but has its fair share of gore. Sure, the concept of being trapped in a house full of psychopathic serial killers has been done before, but House of 1000 Corpses is definitely worth watching. You might even find yourself oddly attached to the eccentric Firefly family towards the end.

8. Saw Series

Everyone loves to hate on the Saw series, with pretty good reason. However, they still have some creative and uncomfortable scenes—perhaps to compensate for the confusing and disorganized plot.

7. Human Centipede

I wasn’t really a fan of this one, but the concept alone is pretty disgusting. As if eating fecal matter wasn’t gross enough

6. Brain Dead/Dead Alive

Dead Alive is one of the few movies that actually made me gag. A wonderful example of horror and comedy, Dead Alive definitely delivers in terms of gore and grossness in general. It’s pretty cheesy, but in the best way possible.

5. Audition

Audition was definitely one of those films that you watch, and the whole time you’re wondering, WTF is happening. The concept is weird on its own—a man holds fake casting auditions to find a wife for himself—and the content is fairly disturbing as well. The plot is a little confusing, but Audition will have you squirming in your seat until the end.

4. Haute Tension

Haute Tension, known as High Tension in North America, is definitely what I would call a mind fuck. It contains some fairly graphic and gory killing scenes, as well as delivers a healthy dose of suspense. A little underrated, but so worth watching.

3. Martyrs

If you haven’t seen this one yet, you’re seriously missing out. It is scary on so many different levels. Not only concept wise, but visually as well. Plus, there’s a graphic shotgun scene in the first act. Who doesn’t love a good shotgun scene?

Martyrs is one of two movies in my entire life that I had to use the fast forward button during. Not because the movie was bad but because the content was so disturbing I literally had to fast forward to keep from being sick. That being said it is still one of the most intense and intelligent films I have ever seen. A young girl who was victimized as a youngster sets out with her friend to seek revenge but what starts out as a path of vengeance quickly spirals out of control. A story of vengeance, torture and the human spirit it is easily one of the most disturbing and well done films I have ever seen. Be warned though this will not be an easy one to sit through!

2. A Serbian Film

A Serbian Film follows a washed up porn star after he agrees to star in an “art film.” The movie is basically a compilation of everything that is horrible. It is extremely difficult to watch for portraying extreme sexual taboos and other gag-worthy actions. Two words: newborn porn. I wouldn’t be able to sit through it again, for it was extremely sick and twisted, but overall well done and worth watching if you’re looking to be shocked and disgusted.

1. Cannibal Holocaust

If you’re unfamiliar with this film, you are definitely missing out. The director actually fell into some legal issues after the making of this film because of its disturbing content. It follows the found footage of a group of missing filmmakers after journeying into the Amazon to capture footage of the cannibalistic tribes. As well as providing a thoughtful social commentary of the modern world, Cannibal Holocaust is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen.

Human Centipede 1&2, gross as hell. Hills have eyes 1&2, Hostel is up there, but the worst is A,B,C’s of Death….I couldn’t even finish it!

        • Mr.King March 23, 2014 at 4:56 am

I forgot Slither…..that one was loads of fun, blood, guts, and worms. I love the scene from the pregnant women in the barn.

      2. CrazyCalico March 23, 2013 at 6:18 pm

Yes! Very solid list. Definitely need to watch some of these movies! Thanks BrideOfChucky!

      3. Dennis Francis March 23, 2013 at 10:35 pm

I couldnt have made a better list.

Serbian Film is my top for this one though. It was disturbing, disgusting, and very hard to watch. It my opinion it is my film of choice that delivers the most shock. Ill never watch it again to be honest because it did cross a boundary for me. And left me with a nasty feeling at the end.

        • BrideOfChucky March 24, 2013 at 9:36 pm

It was very difficult for me to chose between Serbian Film and Cannibal Holocaust! If I could put them both first I would have lol! But I definitely agree that A Serbian Film was extremely disturbing!

      4. K Neko March 24, 2013 at 4:29 pm

I would add “Inside” to this list as well. Myself and my women horror fan friends squirmed at that one. Something about cutting your baby out did it I think.

        • BrideOfChucky March 24, 2013 at 9:38 pm

I really liked Inside as well!

      5. Tiago almeida March 24, 2013 at 4:54 pm

Very nice. Whats really disturbing is that we love this movies so much. Hehehe i would include dead girl, incision, tcm 2, halloween 2 by rz and the devils rejects. When we talk about disturbing cant help to bring rob zombie movies to thw conversation.

        • BrideOfChucky March 24, 2013 at 9:39 pm

I love Rob Zombie. It was a close call between putting House of 1000 Corpses and Devil’s Rejects on the list!

      6. Dennis Francis March 24, 2013 at 5:16 pm

I forgot to add to The Last House of The Left. Both versions.

      7. Tiago Almeida March 25, 2013 at 5:18 am

Yeah, I do agree that House 0f 1000 corpses is more disturbing, with the murder ride, and that fucked up dinner party, but The Devils Rejects is a better movie all along, in my opinion…

        • BrideOfChucky March 25, 2013 at 11:12 pm

          Yes I completely agree!

      8. Flay Otters March 25, 2013 at 5:39 pm

Good list – unpleasant bunch to be sure. I’d also include Life & Death of a porno gang, Salo: 120 Days of Sodom and Girl Next Door in there too.

        • BrideOfChucky March 25, 2013 at 11:11 pm

Yes those were highly disturbing as well!

      9. Mitch March 31, 2013 at 1:03 am

Solid, 4 of these are my favorites… Keep em coming,….

Girl Next Door was very disturbing to me, it actually made me angry, great list.

        • Herner Klenthur April 1, 2013 at 12:22 am

I had the same reaction. A good movie gets under your skin and Jack Ketchum’s Girl Next Door did just that.

I just watched “A Serbian Film” last night.. I don’t know how it made “the most disturbing list” I found it boring with only a handful of nasty, vile, creepy scenes. I don’t know how “Megan is Missing” didn’t make this list?

If you think saw has a disorganized plot, you obviously haven’t watched all of them together, don’t diss on saw, it makes sense, and is a spectacular series. It’s my horror movies of choice

      23. chris November 18, 2013 at 12:21 pm

I never found serbian film to be that disturbing. People are obsessed with babies.

      24. KillerKarebear November 29, 2013 at 8:25 pm

Why isn’t Tokyo Gore Police on this list?

Am I the only person who was bored through Cannibal Holocaust?

      31. whitaker22 January 7, 2016 at 1:59 pm

So this is probably a question I’m going to regret asking but I haven’t seen Serbian Film. I have read so many articles on it and I can’t find that, or Salo on any streaming or buying website… (Which I do not want to buy either of them.. no thank you) I have seen Martyrs but I think that was a fluke because it was late late one night and I sat and watched the whole thing and I haven’t seen it anywhere since. That was probably 6 years ago!

      32. Bastillia July 27, 2016 at 6:38 am

Antichrist with Willem Defoe was very disturbing to me as well.
