25 Greatest Family Halloween Movies Of All Time

Herner Klenthur

Corpse Bride

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are known for working together and Corpse Bride is one of their finest films that is safe and entertaining for all ages. Great animation, great writing and a unique visual style make Corpse Bride a great must see film for Halloween.

When a shy groom practices his wedding vows in the inadvertent presence of a deceased young woman, she rises from the grave assuming he has married her.

Mr Boogedy

I used to watch Mr Boogedy each and every Halloween with my parents and it scared the crap out of me. Its nice to know that I am not alone.

Made in 1986 its the story of a novelty-salesman who moves his family into a new house. Initially dismissing incidents as more of their father’s practical jokes, the family soon learns that the house is haunted by people who lived in the house 300 years previously.

Halloween Town

Everytime we do a top list I find movies I have not seen and should. I am pretty sure I have never seen HalloweenTown but clearly I should its a family friendly film about a girl who visits her grandmother and finds out she has supernatural powers and ends up taking on the forces of Evil.

The Burbs

The Burbs is one of my all time favorite horror comedies. Long before the horror-comedy genre became more mainstream I was laughing my ass off with the Burbs which stars Tom Hanks Corey Feldman and Carrie Fischer. It is a prime example of all things right about 80’s horror.

Directed by Joe Dante its about an overstressed suburbanite and his paramilitaric neighbor struggle to prove their paranoid theory that the new family in town is a front for a cannibalistic cult.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Released in 1983 by Disney it is based off Ray Bradbury’s Novel. This is another one that I have heard good things about but have yet to see. I suppose this Halloween I will put this one on my watch list as well!

In a small American town, a diabolical circus and its demonic proprietor prey on the townsfolk.

Scooby Doo on Zombie Island

The comment was made on our Facebook page that you cant not watch a Scooby Doo movie on Halloween so we picked Scooby Doo on Zombie Island. Scooby and the gang visit Zombie Island, where they find themselves menaced by the ghost of Moonscar the pirate and the island’s most infamous inhabits–Zombies!!

Mad Monster Party

Nothing says Halloween like Stop Motion animation! When Dr Frankenstein decides to retire from the monster-making business, he calls an international roster of monsters to a creepy convention to elect his successor. Everyone is there including Dracula, The Werewolf, The Creature, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and many more. But Frankenstein’s title is not all that is at stake. The famous doctor has also discovered the secret of total destruction that must not fall into the wrong hands!

The Halloween Tree

Cartoon Networks The Halloween Tree is a movie I have never seen but is obviously geared for the youngsters to educate them on safety and Halloween. Four children learn the origins of Halloween customs while trying to save the life of their friend.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

This one has been remade many times but the 1949 classic animated movie is one I used to watch all the time as a kid and it also did a very good job at scaring me stupid! In a small town, a brewing romantic rivalry with a local tough and a schoolteacher culminates in a terrifying ride in the night when the Headless Horseman comes out to hunt.

The Witches

In 1990’s The Witches which stars Angelica Huston a young boy stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse.

Monster House

Walt Disney has made some great ‘scary’ films for children over the years and Monster House is one of the few good ones in recent years. Made in 2006 its about three teens that discover that their neighbor’s house is really a living, breathing, scary monster.

Who you gonna call? Ghost Busters! What says Halloween fun more then Ghost Busters does?

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein

Two hapless frieght handlers find themselves encountering Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster and the Wolf Man.

From the director of Nightmare before Christmas Coraline got tons of 3D Buzz but I of course could not be bothered and saw it in 2D on DVD. This one is a visually stunning masterpiece that is a great choice for Halloween.

Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door and discovers an alternate version of her life on the other side. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life and the people in it only much better. But when this seemingly perfect world turns dangerous, and her other parents (including her Other Mother voiced by Teri Hatcher) try to trap her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to escape this increasingly perilous world and save her family.

        Great list for kids.
I like all those Tim Burton movies, but I think The Nightmare Before Christmas is his best animation. That movie is great.

I had them recorded back to back on a vhs when I was a kid, and now I have them on dvd… I always watch “great pumpkin charlie brown” along with “garfields halloween” every year.. On that note, on that video when I was a kid, there was another one. Probably a made for TV Halloween movie. All I remember about it is it had Blanch from golden girls as a witch. Would be funny to find that and watch it.
