With “The Walking Dead” dominating Sunday nights on AMC, it’s no surprise that the cable network is hoping their zombie goose can lay another golden egg. With their other headline shows, “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad”, coming to an end the network is desperate for another ratings magnet to keep things going.
We’ve known for some time now that the network had ordered a companion series to be made for “The Walking Dead”. However, little has been revealed about what the new series would be about.
Recently, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman spoke with IGN and dropped a few hints about what the spin-off would entail. It seems that Kirkman’s biggest desire is to create another show that is as far removed from the source material as possible. This means not only changing the location of the series, but possibly changing the time period. Here’s a snippet from the interview below and you can read the full transcript here.
It’s going to be set in this world, but it is a new cast and a new setting, and it’s going to be very different. It’s just exciting to be able to start over again and try to do cool stuff.
It’s a really different location with completely different people, so we are going to see an entirely different corner of the Walking Dead world. It definitely won’t be set in Georgia, I can at least say that. It’s important to us that this show exists on its own. The spinoff has to be a show worthy of existing, or else we’ve all sold out. So that’s something we’re all working hard towards doing, and I think we can pull it off. I think that the ideal situation is, when you’re watching the spinoff, you’re like, “Wow, this is a really awesome show.” The whole other show doesn’t need to exist for this show to be cool and stand on its own.
And while Kirkman is staying pretty tight-lipped, TVLine has heard some rumblings that the series could be a prequel of sorts. According to them there’s increasing word that the series could be about the early days of the outbreak and about the efforts to try and stop it. It sounds entirely plausible and would be easy on the budget since they wouldn’t have as many zombies. However, the show is a long way off and a lot of things can change between now and then. I wouldn’t put too much stock in this rumor just yet.
