The Craft Remake Finally Finds a Director

Every so often the rumors of a remake of “The Craft” come to light, but they never seem to really pan out.  Well, it looks like Sony has finally decided to pull the trigger on the project as they’ve announced who will be directing the film.

THR is reporting that director Leigh Janiak will write and direct the remake of the 1996 teen witch thriller.  The original film focused on a group of high school girls who dabble in the occult, but become more powerful with the arrival of a new student.  Before long the girls start to become corrupted by their new power and set out to get revenge on those that wronged them.

Leigh Janiak currently has one other feature film under her belt and that’s the well-reviewed horror film “Honeymoon.”  If you haven’t heard of it, you can check out Flay Otter’s review of the film right here.  Janiak will write the remake of “The Craft” with her “Honeymoon” co-writer Phil Graziadei.

What do you think? Is the telling right for a new “Craft”?  For me, that film is the embodiment of 90’s cinema.  It’s hard for me to separate it from the times and culture that I grew up with.  But the themes and issues featured in the film are timeless and would still resonate with a younger audience.  I’d be willing to see what someone would do with that concept in a modern setting.
