Universal Still Considering a Reboot of ‘Jaws’

Much like the diabolical shark itself, the suggestions of a “Jaws” reboot always seem to be just hiding under the surface of speculation waters, just waiting to attack.  Once again the talk about a “Jaws” reboot has reared it’s ugly head and this time it could be tied up in a big deal between Universal and Dreamworks.

Right now Steven Spielberg is planning to take his production company DreamWorks and split from Disney.  However, he still needs to partner with a major studio and right now the frontrunner for that position is Universal.  The Hollywood Reporter is all over this development and you can read their exclusive story here.

What’s most interesting about this story, though, is the motivations behind Universal.  Obviously being partnered with Steven Spielberg is a smart move, but they also want to do it because it would allow certain projects to move forward with greater ease.  For one they’d have better access to the director and keep him close to the “Jurassic Park” franchise as they put together new films and possible attractions.

The second element is that it would allow them to pursue reboots of “Jaws” and “Back to the Future.”  THR doesn’t go into too much detail about how this could happen, but if Universal is in bed with Spielberg, then I imagine it’d be easier to get him to give his blessing on a new “Jaws” film.  He would also be around to oversee production and help shepherd the film in a direction of his choosing.

Well it ever to come to pass though? The purist in me says no, but I honestly don’t think it would.  It just doesn’t seem like the right move for Universal.  At the very least I could see them potentially making a new “Jaws” sequel, but I don’t think they would attempt to remake that first film.
