[Casting News] The Joker and Harley Quinn To Be Played By Jared Leto and Margot Robbie In “Suicide Squad”

Stephanie Joyce

What’s more important than finding the right guy to play “The Joker” as they will have huge shoes to fill while following-up on the late Heath Ledger’s performance? That’s a rhetorical question.  I mean, who can beat that performance or at least bring his own unique (and bad-ass) rendition to one of the most beloved super-villains of our time? Well, we have the answers to that and we’re finally getting a glimpse on who will be casted as The Joker’s long-time gal Harley Quinn! What movie could bring these two lovers together? Well “The Suicide Squad” is a movie based off of the comics with the same name as it showcases Harley Quinn being a bad-ass on her own (well, on a team of convicts without the Joker) as well as running into “Mr. J” from time-to-time.

Margo and Leto

Margot Robbie, who recently starred in The Wolf of Wall Street and Jared Leto, The Dallas Buyer’s Club, have no problems playing characters who are a little “unhinged.” I mean, have you ever seen Requiem for a Dream (Leto) or Neighbours (Robbie)? And if you’re a fan of “The Suicide Squad” comic series, then you know the series chronicles the antics of villains reluctantly working as a secret government task force that is tasked to go on unsavory and confidential mission on behalf of the government. And we finally get to see the villainous power-couple of The Joker and Harley in-action!

If you haven’t heard of “The Suicide Squad” before, here is the short of it:

The modern Suicide Squad (created by John Ostrander and Ryan Scott), is an antihero team of incarcerated super-villains who act on behalf of the United States government (in-secret) to go on high-risk missions in exchange for shortened prison sentences. The group operates under the directorship of Dr. Amanda Waller (who you may remember from the “Arrow” television series). Thus, the Suicide Squad’s existence helps to explain why many convicted villains in the D.C. Universe roam free without having heroes tracking them down—until they, inevitably, attempt or commit another crime. Also, if any of them try to escape like, say, Harley Quinn as she often likes to reunite with “Mr. J.”, every team member conveniently has a mini explosive implanted in their neck to ensure that they behave.

Now if you’re a big comic book fan-boy or fan-girl (like me!) and, hey, who isn’t!?! – Then you will be excited to hear about the  latest top choices for DC’s latest line-up of actors. And this isn’t your typical comic-book-turned movie story because it stars the villains! How cool is that!?! The latest comic series of the “Suicide Squad” (as there were several re-tellings), currently stars the villains Harley Quinn, Joker’s Daugther, Deadshot, Deathstroke, King Shark and Black Manta. But it will be interesting to see what line-up of villains they go with for the movie version.

Let us know what you think about DC’s latest casting choices as I think that they’ve finally stepped-it-up a bit to rival some of Marvel’s stellar casting choices.

I don’t know about this DC cinematic universe. Not a fan of Nolan’s Batman, but the first 2 were ok. Rises was bad, very bad. From what I heard this new cinematic universe will be based on the Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman upcoming movie. Well I hated Man of Steel, and we can all agree that Affleck was the wrong choice to play the dark knight. All Dc fans can also agree that Arrow, Smallville and the new Gotham series are a piece of junk. So, I don’t expect much from this. Neither I think Jared can act. But the SS new 52 is pretty good.

The modern Suicide Squad’s description reads like a cross between Marvel’s original Freedom Force and the film, The Tournament.

I think she is going to be awesome as Harley Quinn!
I am a Leto fan and he is an amazing actor but he does not meet one REALLY important requirement of an actor playing The Joker.
        The height.
Come on The Joker has to be 6 feet or taller or it just won’t work.
Don’t half ass it. It’s The Joker after all!

hmmm one off Dc comics biggest flaws is that its been most of the time black and white.
heroes are heroes villains is villains … And i cant imagine that black knight would even be possible for a benchmark on this…. Instead i think it it will be fluff visual content but no substance just as superman vs batman will probably be :)
