The Evil Dead remake directed by Fede Alvarez will hit theaters April 13th 2013 and as much as I was an early nay sayer I have to say I have been convinced that this could be the best horror movie of the year and dare I say it one of the best movies that Sam Raimi has helped produce.
I have come up with 5 solid reasons why I think that you should see the remake of Evil Dead. This goes for new fans to the genre as well as die hards like myself who have questioned all along why on earth we need a remake of Evil Dead. No movie will ever match the original Evil Dead and frankly Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell who are both producers in my view are not trying to.
The original Evil Dead will always be an absolute classic but this new Evil Dead remake is definitely going to be its own beast and here are five reasons everyone should go see it when it hits theaters on April 13th.
The Evil Dead Remake Has No CGI
Considering the special effects that have been shown off in the red band trailer this in itself is nothing short of amazing. According to the director Fede Alvarez they made the decision early on that this movie would not have any CGI in it at all and they have made this movie with old school practical effects, illusions and as he calls it ‘magic tricks’.
If I had not told you this movie had no CGI what so ever I doubt you would have thought it was done entirely with practical special effects. Old school horror fans will love hearing that we wont be seeing sloppy CGI work.

Sam Raimi & Bruce Campbell are Both Back
I should add a small note here that Sam Raimi is not directing and much to my early disgust Bruce Campbell is not starring. I would have loved to have seen an older more rugged ASH played by Bruce Campbell reprise his role to save the world but it was clear early on this would not happen.
Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert the star/director/and producers of the original Evil Dead are all back as producers on the Evil Dead Remake. Sam Raimi wrote the original screenplay with Diablo Cody then did rewrites on which depending on who you ask is either good news or bad news. Anyway you cut it I feel that having the three original brains behind the first film involved guiding the remake is important.
Bruce and Sam have both said in interviews this movie is better then what they did in the original Evil Dead. All I can say is if its half as good we are in for a great and Bruce and Sam dont sell yourselves short. The original is a classic that will never loose its status within the horror genre.

Its Not in 3D
Most of you know that I am not the biggest fan of 3D. I also know many of you were shocked when I praised the fact that Texas Chainsaw 3D was coming out in 3D. When 3D is done right and not an after though post production conversion it is absolutely fantastic. Case and point DREDD was the best 3D movie I have ever seen and is the film that stopped me from talking crap about 3D as a gimmick.
That said as much as I am no longer a complete hater of 3D movies I am glad that they opted to not use 3D, not use any CGI and make Evil Dead in pure classic form with one hundred percent practical effects from start to finish.

It Looks Scary as S**t
It is not very often I look at a horror movie and think ‘holy crap’ much less ‘holy s**t that looks scary’. The Evil Dead remake will be nothing like the original because this one looks like its going to be hide under the bed scary and an absolute festival of brutal violence as the Necronomicon unleashes unholy hell on the new cast of characters.

A New Take on Ash
Originally I was beyond pissed off when I heard that ASH was being recast and Bruce Campbell would not play the part. When Sean William Scott’s name was proposed to play ASH my head just about exploded. Things took an even wierder choice when it was revealed the Ash character would be female and an even stranger twist when the character Ash was completely removed from the Evil Dead remake.
As much as it caused me outrage that Ash is not being played by Bruce I think that I was wrong in my original thinking. Nobody can play Ash like Bruce Campbell did… period… no discussion. So taking that character in a new direction and pretty much eliminating it from the movie is a good thing. It will at least stop most of us genre die hards from going ‘that is not what Ash would do’.

So thats the reason i sould watch it…well if that are all the reasons a won’t…
Maybe you should see it just because it’s going to be a good, scary movie?
Well i hope that most people will like this one, name me one remake(exept maybe Last house on the left) that is actualy good? And I was hoping that they will use little brains that they have and do ED 4 or at least ED animated movie(that would be awsome so Bruce Cambell can voice act, and original cast since they put all efford in promoting this one)
The hills have eyes remake is much better than the original (although I love that too). Also I think I preferred the Fright Night remake, although it lacked Roddy McDowell.
Dawn of the Dead remake, The Hills Have Eyes remake, The Fly remake, The Thing remake, Night of the Living Dead remake. I dont mean to be a dick but you are totally wrong. I am not a huge fan of remakes but you can not say they all sucked because its simply not true.
I can honetly agree with Hills have eyes(ehem The Fly and the Thing are ’80 movies)i was thinking the new era of remakes that was spawned from TCM,Dawn of the dead is terrible IMO and NOTLD is just solid little movie…But than again lets just agree to disagree. And Jim i didn’t like FN remake at all for me its just a mess :/
I’ve read and re-read your comment in vain hope of understanding what it is that you wish to convey with it. I am now giving up.
I like the idea that the Ash character was removed to avoid comparing.
I completely agree @facebook-542581662:disqus The new ASH Makes it more palpable.
Let’s not forget, Sam Raimi’s preference for a better budget, better actors, better effects, etc. has been well-documented. He’s said time and again, if he had better equipment and more money, better technology, he would have been able to make the movie HE wanted to make. Since he didn’t have that, he was left with what he had. And yet, he still ended up making a masterpiece. Some argue that Raimi could/should have remade it himself, but he kinda already did in ED2. And besides, Raimi and Co. hand-picked Alvarez, presumably for his vision and fresh thinking. The Evil Dead is my #1 all-time favorite horror movie; however, I am prepared to watch the new one with an open mind. Given what we’ve seen so far, I have a strong feeling this will stand up to the original.
@twitter-378636623:disqus well said good sir. A very intelligent and well thought out comment. Thanks for reading and sharing your 2 cents.
I doubt that it is going to be good, maybe im hating to much but the effects they were using back then are much better(all the creatures and deadites are wonderfull, final touch with clayanimation is realy inovative and interesting back then)And if Sam Raimi sad it then it must be true, let’s look at Spiderman 3 for example(third instalment to the movie is the worst garbage they make)Maybe his magic only work on horror genre,i will eventualy see it(but not in theatre)…
No matter what our preconceptions are about this remake, when it comes out on April 13, I’m sure we will all run to the theeatre to watch it. Save your criticism until after you’ve seen it.
Completely agree.
Thats your way,a would rather watch something else…I won’t def.pay the price to see that movie, but thats just me
I’m scared alright scared it will become a multi remake the original 1 and two are old school grity clasics and should be held scared but picking up where army of darkness let off would be genius
I’m not sure about other places but it is being released in Canada on April 5th, the date was moved up (which I am excited about). Originally, I was like ‘oh crap, another remake, probably in 3D, WHY MUST YOU DO THIS?!’ but after seeing trailers I have to see it, haha. As you mentioned, I am definitely glad Bruce Campbell is back but I would have loved to see him in the film as well. Since he isn’t, I am kinda glad that they aren’t making an Ash character, because as you mentioned, nobody would be able to do it as good or better than Bruce. And I have to say, I am practically jumping for joy about the fact that IT WILL NOT BE IN 3D!! *YAY* I just hate the fact they seem to think they can do everything in 3D and then they barely even freaking do anything with it. So, as you can tell, this is one I’m looking forward to. It looks very creepy and gory which I love. xD
Cool
Hey idiot. There is no Ash in this remake and Seann William Scott isn’t in it either. You do know which film you’re reviewing, right? At least look on IMDB for your basic cast and crew, lol.
Name calling, how nice of you…
This nice chap is right about one thing though; I’m not in the remake
Having just seen it, I can say it’s terrible.
Managed to watch it and its not great and pretty much follows the same route as cabin in the woods which is pretty much a horror comedy, effects are better than the original and so is the acting but it pales in comparison to raimi’s classic – also it’s not scary either
Agree with the poster above me and it’s terrible
I’d read on multiple sites before actually having seen the movie and they all assured me there would be no CGI. But, alas, there is. The worst of the CGI is a plastic bag over someone’s head and it looks terrible and hilarious.
