Cloverfield Review: Beware Motion Sickness!
Posted By : Meh, Saturday Jan,05

I am going to confess that I have never been a fan of the handycam approach to filmmaking. Namely Blair Witch style where you have a shakey cam throughout the whole movie that makes you feel ill. In a new review posted on AICN from somebody who supposedly saw the movie in a private screening we get a few things revealed. First off that it is NOT a genre defining movie. The reader defined it is solid but far from great and certainly not anything new or defining to the horror genre. Is anyone surprised by this?

This movie has been marketed from day one just like Snakes on a Plane which has sent warning bells off for me since about the 3 or 4th month of studio generated buzz. With that said I fully expect this film to be a SMASH hit opening week and generate some serious numbers, just like Snakes on A Plane did. Whether it will hold up will depend on what sort of reviews you all post. Its your reviews that dictate the box office since once folks get onto the interweb and start reading them... if the reviews are bad the gig is up!

The reviewer also goes on to say that the scares are your typical 'gotcha' style, the monster jumps out of the closet routine. He also says their are certain scenes in the movie that you have to suspend belief entirely to believe that certain things could happen, which he also didnt spoil or get into any detail on. The final warning is if you suffer from motion sickness you probably will want to medicate before seeing the movie.

From what seems like day one the studio has used Myspace and youtube to promote this movie and some of my friends who blog have even suggested much of the leaked materials on the internet originated from the studio and was far from a leak. Rather it was well done viral marketing. I can see why they might think this way. Again if you look back to Snakes on a Plane what everyone THOUGHT was internet buzz turned out to be carefully generated studio buzz which we all now call 'viral marketing' in our discussions on the boards.

So the big question becomes what do you think? Will you see CloverField? If so or if not.. why? It seems to me that the trend on the site is the readers are turning against the movie and specifically the cloak and dagger marketing of the film but showing nothing approach. ( feel free to comment and disagree with me ). This film started out with one of the highest ratings on the site and slowly has dropped to a near 50% approval rating as you can see below. So where do you stand on the mystery of CloverField and will you shell out your money to see it in theatres?

CloverField

Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most su...
