Kevin Williamson, of Scream fame and Kyle XY's Julie Plec have penned the pilot based on the novels by L.J. Smith.  The books were released originally way back in 1993 (long before Twilight), however were re-released on the heels of the Twilight Phenomenom and have since all hit the New York Times Bestsellers list, with 3 more new books on the way.

Vampire Diaries centers on Elena (Dobrev), a tragic heroine who is the object of passion two vampire brothers.
