2009 Horror Box Office Roundup!

Ah yes good friends, the year 2009 is just about to end in the big binge most of the world is about to embark upon.   But before we close out the New Year, I’ve decided on doing an ‘End of the Year’ Box Office Roundup.  Taking a look at the top ten genre films that took your green (or whatever interesting color your currency is) at the box office.

I decided to break it into two categories, those that hit it Domestic and a second group for complete Worldwide total.  Those who remember I did a Summer Box Office Roundup I mentioned with my powers of foresight that Twilight: New Moon would be #1, and I was right.  See if your favorite film made the bank!

Domestic

1.    The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $274.5million
2.    Terminator: Salvation - $125million
3.    District 9 - $115million
4.    Paranormal Activity $107million
5.    Zombieland - $75.5million
6.    Coraline - $75.2million
7.    Obsessed - $68.2million
8.    The Final Destination - $66.4million
9.    Friday the 13th - $65million
10.  My Bloody Valentine 3D- 51.5million

Some very solid bank right there, however out of the whole lot, Terminator: Salvation stands alone as the only film not to go into the black on it’s domestic total.  And out of the lot, Paranormal Activity is the biggest winner.

Worldwide

1.    The Twilight Saga: New Moon – $634.6million
2.    Terminator: Salvation - $372million
3.    District 9 – $204.5million
4.    The Final Destination - $152.6million
5.    Coraline - $121.9million
6.     Paranormal Activity - $107million
7.    My Bloody Valentine 3D – $99.9million
8.    Zombieland - $93.2million
9.    Friday the 13th – 91.3million
10.  Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - $91million

Placement of the first three stayed consistent, somewhat unsurprising.  Terminator however did go into the black with its worldwide gross.  However, Obsessed dropped from the list and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans made it.  I was thinking about leaving Paranormal Activity out as it’s still yet to be released overseas, however technically its domestic counts towards worldwide, so I left it.

So yes boys and girls, those are the top grossing films both Domestic and Worldwide in our genre for the year of 2009!  We have a full slate next year starting quickly with Daybreakers and Legion.  However, using my gift of foresight, I foresee The Twilight Saga: Eclipse taking #1 slot again in 2010.

See if my prediction holds true and if it does, Meh owes me a beer.  I don’t know if he will get me a beer, but a guy can hope right?

*Grosses are as of December 21, 2009 and numbers are from BoxOfficeMojo
