Everyone on HM.CA that knows me knows that I’m a huge slasher movie fan. So I’m sure that it comes at no surprise to you that I loved the movie Hatchet. Right after viewing Hatchet I was already wishing for a sequel and fortunately my wish was granted. Unfortunately, when it was released to select theaters it wasn’t playing anywhere near me so I wasn’t able to go see it in theaters. But luckily it wasn’t long before it was released onto Video On Demand so I finally got to check it out and I’m glad to say it was everything I expected it to be.

Plot: Marybeth escapes the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling iconic killer Victor Crowley. After learning the truth about her family's connection to the hatchet-wielding madman, Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact the bloodiest revenge against the bayou butcher.

In a time plagued by crappy remakes and pathetic big budget CGI filled horror films(Piranha 3D excluded) it’s refreshing to see an awesome old school American horror flick like Hatchet 2. If you liked the original Hatchet than you’re going to love Hatchet 2. I can honestly say it’s better than it’s predecessor in every area.

The first thing I noticed was how much better shot Hatchet 2 was than the first. Adam Green did a great job and once again proves he’s one of the best modern day horror directors. The acting is also much better this time around and the entire cast did a great job. Danielle Harris especially does a great job playing the vengeful Marybeth and horror legend Tony Todd is awesome as Rev. Zombie. I was very pleased to see that Tony Todd’s character had a much larger role than in the first Hatchet.  I also liked how Hatchet 2 wasn’t as comical as the first. It does have some comic relief, especially during a very memorable sex scene, but overall it’s a darker film than the first.

Now I’ll get to the good stuff. The gore. The gore in Hatchet 2 is amazing to say the least. I’m a total gore whore so when I say something is gory you can bet your ass that it is actually going to be gory. Hatchet 2 has double the amount of over the top gore than the first and it’s all done the old way. No CGI. I won’t spoil all of the gore scenes but just to give you an example, we see disembowelments, jaw removal, head splittings, decapitations and tons of other equally awesome creative kills that I guarantee will give you multiple goregasms.

Hatchet 2 is a very straight forward and entertaining old school slasher flick that ranks right up there with Piranha 3D as best horror film of 2010. Hatchet 2 will be available on DVD and blu-ray on February 1st. If you want to see a kick ass gore drenched slasher I highly recommend you buy a copy.
