CloverField Sequel Updates From Matt Reeves

Director Matt Reeves has been silent pretty much over the last year about a sequel to Cloverfield and one of the most common questions we see on site is when is Cloverfield 2 going to arrive? Matt Reeves in an interview with Total Film Magazine has finally shared some new updates on Cloverfield 2 and its progress. He tells them that a sequel is coming but as for when well that is the real question;

Well, you are going to see it – we just don’t know when [laughs]. At the moment we are talking about the story quite a lot. Drew Goddard, who wrote the original, is going to pen the sequel and JJ Abrams is very much involved. However, the three of us have been so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time.

Drew Goddard and JJ Abrams are currently busy getting ready to launch Super 8 into theaters along with Steven Spielberg. Both are writers and producers on the scifi epic which looks to be Cloverfield in a small town, minus the first person shooting. As for the question of whether Cloverfield 2 will be shot like the first one in First Person we have some unfortunate news on that front because it looks like they are leaning in that direction. Matt Reeves tells Total Film quote;

You see, that’s a difficult part: we want it to be shot like the first but how can you continue that idea successfully for a second time? We have a lot of affection for the original and the sequel can’t just be the same thing. But that is tricky when you need to have a monster destroying stuff once again.

I enjoyed Cloverfield but the thing that made the film really obnoxious to me was how seasick it made me feel. It was a great script with a strong cast of relative unknowns but the shaky cam routine literally had me closing my eyes and shaking my head to clear the cobwebs out from the camera shaking. JJ Abrams has said in the past that this film is not going to be a true sequel but will likely tell the story of Cloverfield from a different location and perspective, perhaps somewhere else in the world. What are your thoughts on a sequel? Excited?
