Frank Grillo May Be Done With ‘The Purge’

Sometimes you have to get while the gettin’ is good and it looks like actor Frank Grillo may be well aware of that.  The star of the last two “Purge” films may not be returning for a fourth installment.

Actor Frank Grillo jumped into the Purge series with “Purge: Anarchy” and helped turned a pretty okay home invasion film into a more action oriented escape film.  Then he returned for last years timely release of “Purge: Election Year.”  A film that I thought was possible the weakest in entry in the series thus far. Speaking with Collider, Grillo opened up about the possibility of returning for another installment.  Here’s what he had to say:

After Anarchy, Universal called me and said, ‘You’ve got a franchise. We’re gonna continue with this, if you wanna do this.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, this is great!’ And so, when Election Year was even more successful, they were like, ‘Let’s keep doing this!’ I was like, ‘Maybe. I think I might be done, but you should keep doing it!’ If DeMonaco was still involved and they came up with a great idea, then I think I would do [another Purge movie]. Otherwise, I think I’m done.

So it looks like he’s leaving the door open for a possible return, but as it stands it looks like Frank Grillo is setting his sights on other horizons.  And while I loved his character in both films, it’s probably for the best.  For one, I think the Purge works best when each film is a different style.  I love the fact that the first entry is a home invasion film and the second is more of a “Escape From New York” style action film.  Having the third be more of the same really hurt it.  At this point I think it’d be best to let that character ride off into the sunset and focus on another style of film for the fourth entry.
