Horror Movie Recommendations For Fans of Insidious

Last week I launched a brand new editorial where we looked at a particular horror film and then looked at what you the community were recommending for related viewing. When you rank horror movies on site you are not only voting for your favorite and least favorite films but you are contributing to the reccomendation engine which helps our community find other films that they might also like. Think of it as a dumbed down take on the Netflix recommendation system. Last week we looked at recommended movies for fans of  Zombieland and this week we are going to take a look at the smash hit Insidious.

Insidious was made on a shoe string budget and so far is the most profitable film of 2011. In our poll of almost 500 users the vote was 79% in favor of the movie as being a must see. Below you can checkout the related films that users who liked Insidious also liked.

Cloverfield: Users who saw Insidious 81% also thought highly of Cloverfield. Cloverfield revolves around a monster attack in New York and follows the adventure of five people from the perspective of a hand-held video camera, while they try to save a friend and escape. The movie is exactly the length of a DV Tape and a sub-plot is established by showing bits and pieces of video previously recorded on the tape that is being recorded over.

Drag Me To Hell: 81% of those who liked Insidious also loved Drag Me To Hell. No shock here since for me Insidious was quite similar in the feel and tone. After denying a woman the extension she needs to keep her home, loan officer Christine Brown sees her once-promising life take a startling turn for the worse. Christine is convinced she’s been cursed by a Gypsy, but her boyfriend is skeptical. Her only hope seems to lie in a psychic who claims he can help her lift the curse and keep her soul from being dragged straight to hell.

The Mist: 79% also liked The Mist which for me is easily the best Stephen King Movie adaptation of all time. The ending just kicks you in the gut! After a violent storm attacks a town in Maine, an approaching cloud of mist appears the next morning. As the mist quickly envelops the area, a group of people get trapped in a local grocery store -among them, artist David Drayton and his five-year-old son. The people soon discover that within the mist lives numerous species of horrific, creatures that entered through an inter-dimensional rift.

Shutter Island: 79% also liked the dark thriller Shutter Island. I am not a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio as a rule but can not deny my love for this fantastic thriller. Set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island.

Suspiria: 78% of those who saw Insidious also liked the classic horror tale from Dario Argento Suspiria. A newcomer to a fancy ballet academy gradually comes to realize that the staff of the school are actually a coven of witches bent on chaos and destruction.

Psycho: 78% of those who saw Insidious also had a passion for the classic Alfred Hitchcock film PSYCHO. Psycho is one of the most famous masterpieces from Hitchcock and for it’s time was unparalleled in it’s horror effect. A chilling score sets the pace for an introverted killer and a mystery thriller case of multiple dimensions. The credits for the film directed by Saul Bass were revolutionary for their time.

The Exorcist: 76% also loved this classic tale of demonic terror. Something beyond comprehension is happening to a little girl on this street, in this house. A man has been called for as a last resort to try and save her. That man is The Exorcist.

The Evil Dead: No surprise that this film is reccomended viewing. 74% of you who liked Insidious also enjoyed this Sam Raimi master piece. Ever-present, ever-listening, the Evil Dead lies in wait for the one ancient incantation that will give them license to possess the living. Watch in horror as five vacationing college students are forced into battle with the supernatural forces that occupy the forests and dark bowers of man’s domain. The innocent must suffer. The guilty must be punished. One-by-one, the students are possessed by these demons whose thirst for revenge is insatiable. As the night wanes, only one man remains… Ash. He must now defend himself while trying to uncover the horrible secret of The Evil Dead.

The Descent: Last and certainly not least Neil Marshalls Descent makes our list with 76% of Insidious fans loving this tale of claustrophobic terror. After a tragic accident, six friends reunite for a caving expedition. Their adventure soon goes horribly wrong when a collapse traps them deep underground and they find themselves pursued by bloodthirsty creatures. As their friendships deteriorate, they find themselves in a desperate struggle to survive the creatures and each other.
