Luke Evans to Star in Dracula: Year Zero

Universal Pictures must have developed a soft spot for Luke Evans.  Not only is he playing the baddie in their upcoming Fast and Furious 6, but now they’ve handed him the lead role of Dracula in Dracula: Year Zero.

Variety is reporting that the film is a ”mix of mythology and true history as it follows the story of Prince Vlad, the inspiration for the Dracula character popularized by the Bram Stoker novel.”  So an origin story, taking Dracula back to his “historical” roots.  It’s possible Universal could be looking to start a new franchise with the Dracula character and using this film as the basis for a jumping off point.

This goes along with other such plans of rebooting The Mummy and Van Helsing in an attempt to create a new franchises out of Universal’s classic monster catalog.

Gary Shore, a relative new comer, is handling directorial duties with a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

What do you think? Does Luke Evans have what it takes to pull off Dracula?  Sound off in the comment section below!
