Universal’s ‘Dracula’ sucks in Zach McGowan

Blood suckers rejoice!  Shameless star Zach McGowan, fresh from filming the first season of STARZ’s upcoming “historical” drama Black Sails, is the latest to join the prequel/reboot of the 1931 Universal classic Dracula.  McGowan teams up with Dominic Cooper of The Devil’s Double fame or Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter infamy if you prefer, as well as star Luke Evans recently of Fast & Furious 6 and soon to be of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Dracula is set during the reign of Prince Vlad, played by Luke Evans, presumably before he became the notorious stabby type and the legend of the Count we know today.  I’m totally onboard for a vampire origin story, but if the film’s three stars are any indication it looks as though we’ve got another “sexy vampire” flick on our hands.  Although the premise “mythology combined with the true history…” sounds enticing, I’m not yet convinced this won’t be yet another…well…terrible movie.

Universal is taking some major leaps of faith with their newest adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel.  Newcomer Gary Shore will be directing with newcomers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless penning the script, not to mention this will be Luke Evan’s first starring role giving Universal a triple play of money juggling.

Although things are looking grim, I’m hoping Dracula can knock it out of the park leaving us blood thirsty for more.  Are you liking these vampire puns?

Look for Dracula in theaters August 8th, 2014.
